About the Worcester County League of Sportsmen's Clubs
The Worcester County League of Sportsmen's Clubs, the cooperative effort of more than sixty sportsmen's clubs with a membership of 20,000 members in Worcester County , joined together as one organization to promote and protect the interests of sportsmen and citizens in the areas of conservation, environment, farmer, landowners and sportsmen relations, hunting, fishing and access to public waters.
Although many of the member clubs predated 1900, Fitchburg Sportsmen's Club 1877, Leominster 1866, they formally joined together as a League during the 1920's when they realized that as modern growth and expansion came to Massachusetts , the time had come to organize under one body if the environment and habitat to provide wildlife was to be preserved.
The League was initially organized September 1, 1929 as the League of Worcester County Rod and Gun Clubs, and later incorporated as the Worcester County League of Sportsmen's Clubs.
The League is a prime example of citizen participation in action. From the start of an interest in hunting and fishing, the League, keeping abreast of the times, soon enlarged its scope to include all areas of environmental protection.
To accomplish these goals the League has involved itself in active programs and cooperated with other organizations with similar aims to provide open space, to prevent and control pollution's, to promote legislative action and participation, and propagation of fish and game species, and land acquisition, together with habitat improvement to ensure the increase of natural species.
